the simple answer is as many times as he wants. However, there is such a thing as the right to a speedy trial. If it is postponed too many times, you can apply to have the matter tried or dismissed.

Unfortunately there is no three strikes and your out rule for the court's rescheduling a hearing. If you feel that you are prejudiced or harmed in some way by the court repeatedly rescheduling the case then you should hire an attorney to file the appropriate motion with the court to dismiss the charge on constitutional grounds. As the other attorneys indicated, there is no rule on the books, it is all up to the Judge. I've had cases go on for years with over a dozen adjournment and then others where a Judge won't allow for one. I'd like to know what type of case this is. Feel free to call or email me to discuss it.
