Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey
If a school bus is stopped with it's red lights flashing at the begining of an intersection and I am about 50 feet from the bus and want to make a left turn down the intersection am I required to stop even though I am 50 feet from the bus?

In reviewing the statute, that would appear to be far enough away to permit you to make the turn. However, it is always better to stop and wait until the bus has either finished picking up or dropping off children amd the lights have stopped flashing before you proceed. I am guessing that you received a ticket for passing a school bus (which carries 5 motor vehicle points, along with other penalties) based on the nature of the question. If so, it also depends on what the officer claims that he saw. It may also depend on how close you were to the bus when you actually made the turn. Please feel free to contact me to discuss further, I would be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
Of course it would help if I gave you my number (sorry, it has been a long day) (201)-894-9498
