Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

Out of State DUI

I hold a VA drivers license and have been charged with DUI in NJ. I want to change my drivers license to NJ before this court date comes up. Is that possible and if so, what will be the procedure that NJ has to take since the charge was issued under a VA drivers license? I have a clean drivers record in VA (actually a +5 point credit). Will NJ be required to report the offense to VA since I held a VA drivers license at the time of the charge but not at the time of conviction? I have criminal charges in VA that will be adversely affected by this DUI if convicted, but only if it is reported to VA. Hence, the reason for changing over to a NJ license. Does NJ automatically check criminal backgrounds after a DUI conviction? Does VA automatically check criminal backgrounds if a license is suspended from another state?

Everything is computerized these days, so anything that happens in the traffic courts in New Jersey will be reported to the state where you have a driver's license. I never heard of any criminal matter being affected by a traffic ticket (other than vehicular homicide) so I can't speculate about whether a DUI conviction in Jew Jersey would negatively impact a criminal charge in Virginia. DUI is NOT a criminal charge in New Jersey; it is just a traffic ticket.
