Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

tickets for driving with revoked registration due to no insurance

i was ticketed by a piscataway police officer in my driveway after i had exited my vehicle and walked a few steps away, only to be ordered back into the vehicle and eventually ticketed. two tickets were given to me. one for revoked registration and the other for failure to surrender revoked registration. the officer claimed he was cutting me alot of slack because he could've towed my vehicle and impounded due to the nature of not having the vehicle insured. now the whole catch to this situation is that i had a valid geico insurance card but i did not have insurance at the time because i missed my bi-annual payment that i thought i had submitted in september '07. the month was crazy as i was moving, starting school and i thought that i had squared away all my bills in time. obviously that was not the case. an additional quirk to the situation is that i was ticketed for driving without insurance several years back around 2004. i spoke with the prosecutor, prior to my 2nd court appearance and managed no loss of driving privileges, nor any points but a hefty $1k fine. i've since reinstated my insurance policy and have ''new'' registration for my vehicle. how do i handle this situation with or without legal representation?
