Legal Question in Veterans Law in New Jersey
hyperaldosteronism
what is benign or malignant hyperaldosteronism 7917 as scheduled by VA? I know what benign or malignant tumors are. We were taught that malignant meant ''active'' while malignancy meant cancerous! Thank you.

Re: hyperaldosteronism
Aldosteronism refers to tumors of the adrenal cortex that cause electrolyte imbalance, which may be either active (malignant) or inactive (benign). Hyper in this case refers to an excessive production of the steroid aldosterone. You don't say in your question whether or not the person you are referring to has been diagnosed with this or even if they have applied for VA disability benefits. If they have applied for VA disability benefits and have either been denied benefits or just would like to discuss their case in more detail, please have them contact me. I am one of the few attorneys in New Jersey licensed to practice before the US Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. There is never any charge for simply discussing a case with me. Thank you.

Re: hyperaldosteronism
You have cited one line from what is apparently a form, possibly a disability form. It is difficult to tell what the meaning of the line is outside of the context.
As stated below, you should be discussing this question with the doctor or doctors who assigned this code.
I can give you some idea about the terms:
It is not clear from the single line you quote if the person has hyper-aldosteronism or even was evaluated for hyper-aldosteronism.
Hyperaldosteronism is a hormonal condition that is associated with high blood pressure and electrolyte abnormalities, particularly potassium. Someone carrying this diagnosis needs to discuss it with a physician as the proper management of the condition has impotant consquences for that persons health.
Regarding the phrase benign or malignant the online source I have located indicates that code 7917 would apply to both benign and malignant hyper-aldosteronism, so that the code itself does not differentiate between benign and malignant causes. This is a question for the doctor who assigned the code.
