Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New Jersey

Funeral costs vs. medical bills

My father in law passed away over 1 year ago, with minimal assets that we sold off, making the estate worth approximately $2000. We paid the funeral expenses which were over $2000, with these funds as well as our own personal funds. He had many medical bills, most of which, after informing them of the financial situation, have not bothered us anymore. However, there is one lawyer that is still trying to collect a small medical bill of $300, and is requesting a copy of the estate financial records since we are claiming there are insufficient funds to pay this bill. My question is, do the funeral costs take precedence over the medical bills? Were we responsible to pay this $300 bill before the funeral costs? I don't think they sent the bill before we paid the funeral costs, so we were not aware of this particular bill at that time. Thank you for your help!
