Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New Jersey
Hello
My husband's elderly cousin died in a house fire this weekend. He lived alone and had no wife or children. We are unsure how to handle this --who is responsible for him so to speak, as well as the next steps to take. How do we find out if he had a burial plot, or will? Who will be responsible for handling his estate? Etc. etc. etc.

That is so sad, my condolences on your loss. And such an unexpected and horrible event.

I am sorry for your loss, especially in such a horrible way. As to his estate, you do need good solid legal advice as to the moves you need to make. There are many other questions that need to be answered before giving any complete advice. His estate needs to be probated, but you have to wait at least 10 days after someone's death to do that. Usually, the nearest relative becomes the administrator of the estate and then goes about trying to gather and determine the assets. If I can be of help, pleasse call for an appointment or just call so I can answer your initial questions more completely.
