You would have to check at the County Clerk/Register Office in the County where your mother lived at the time of her death, to see if any lien or mortgage has been recorded. If you go to the Recorder's Vault (the record room where all liens are stored) someone can assist you in trying to locate if anything has been recorded. If this sounds intimidating and you know someone at a title company, for a small fee they can do this for you.
