my mom just died her 80 yr old acquaintence has power of attorney
What does this mean?

His power of attorney died with her death. Her estate must be probated. If she had a will it must be filed with th Surrogate of the county were she lived. If she had no will her estate is to be distributed in accordance with the laws of intestacy.
