Obtaining information regarding settlement

My father passed away 17 months ago. My cousin and my father's girlfriend were named as executors of the will. All the property was sold as of 12/31/03. I asked my cousin, who has let me know everything that has transpried as it has transpired, what is going on and how much longer, approximatly until the will settlement is finalized and proceeds distributed. He said he has no idea as the lawyer doesn't tell him a lot. I have contacted the lawyer to find out what is going on and how much longer, approximatly until the will settlement is finalized and proceeds distriubted. He has not responded to me. Is this normal? Shouldn't the lawyer keep the executors informed regarding what is going on? How can I find out what is going on and why this is taking so long?

It is hard to say how long it "normally" takes to conclude an estate. It depends, of course, on a lot of factors. If you have reason to believe that there is something wrong with the probate process, you should schedule an appointment with an attorney, who can review the situation and advise you accordingly.

If the lawyer does not respond, you have 2 options. First, call the Surrogate's Court and get a copy of the Will, and see what has taken place there. There could be tax matters to be resolved, which could take time. The lawyer should keep both the executors and the beneficiaries advised on progress. Second, you could call the local bar association ethics office and file a complaint if he refuses to provide information.
