To cash the check, it will need to be endorsed by the executor or administrator for the estate.

To deposit the check, an estate bank accout must be opened. That will require an estate tax I.D. number, which is fairly easy to obtain.

Dear sir or madam:

You must obtain a tax ID number and open a bank account in the name of the estate.

If an executor or administrator has been appointed for the estate, they need to open an estate bank account, which requires a tax ID number, which the appointed person can do on-line at the IRS website Using Form SS-4). If no one has yet been appointed, someone in the family must be appointed by the Surrogate in the County where your father died. How was the property sold without some estate representative appointed? What other assets remain in your father's estate that may also need someone appointed to sell or liquidate?
