How do I find out if someone has been declared mentally or legally incompetent in the state of New Jersey courts.

Well, it's not like they're to the point that you could look it up on a computer but people who are declared incompetent must also have a Guardian appointed to make decisions for them. These legal proceedings are handled by the Surrogate's Court. They can usually find something like that fairly easily because there's not a lot of them as opposed to if you asked when was the Will of John Jones admitted to probate.

Call the Surrogate's Office in the County where the supposedly "Incapacitated" (that's what they're called now) was domiciled and they should be able to tell you if there were ever any proceedings of that nature involving that individual. It would help a lot if you knew approximately when you think this may have happened (within a couple of years or so).
