My mom died and there is no will . what do I need to do to get a short certtificate from the register of wills

If your mother died without a will, she died "intestate." In that case, a family member [maybe you] will need to go to the Surrogate's office and qualify as the administrator for her estate. The administrator position is similar to an executor.

If you are the only child you go to the Surrogate for the county where your mother resided to apply for Administration. Bring an original death certificate and check for fees.

If you have any siblings, all of you are equally entitled to apply, so the others would have to sign Renunciations in your favor.
