how do you know if you were left something in a will and the person died.

If you know the NJ county where the person lived, you can read a copy of the will at the Surrogate's office if the will has been probated.
In addition, if you are and heir at law, even if you are not named in the will, the executor must provide you with a copy of the will w/in 60 days of the dated the will is probated.

I agree with Jon. You can go to the Surrogate's Office in person to read the Will, or for a small fee they can send you a copy. They will explain how to have it mailed.
