Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New Jersey

wills

My mother, who died 12 years ago, left me everything in her will except for 20, 000 Dollars that was to go to my stepbrother. We hadn't seen him or been in touch with him for years. When she died, I put some ads in newspapers in towns where I thought he migtht be to alert him to contact me. He never has. Is there a time limit as to when I am

no longer reponsibility to give him the money?

Re: wills

Presuming you are the Executor of the estate, and even if not, unless you can establish he predeceased your mother, the Executor has the duty to follow the Will and the funds should be deposited with the State of NJ Unclaimed Property Fund. You are taking a risk, even if you did all you could to locate him, by keeping his inheritence. If he ever materializes he could claim his inheritence and imputed interest thereon for all the years. There are many other thoughts I have, too many for this reply. Contact me directly if you would like to discuss this.
