Back Injury at Part-time jon

I recently injured my back at my part time job lifting furniture and other heavy objects. I have never had any back injuries or problems with my back in the past. The day I hurt my back, I was sent home from the job. Later that day I went to the emergency room because the pain was unbearable. I had severe muscle spasms and a severe strain in my lower lumbar region. Later I saw a doctor on my own who confirmed these findings and prescribed medication and physical therapy. An adjuster from the worker's comp insurance company from my employer called me to see if I had seen a doctor. I explained to her that I did, and she stated she would call me after my follow up visit. A month later I am still experiencing some pain and discomfort, and I have not heard from the adjuster, nor has she returned my phone calls. I also have not received any worker's comp payment yet. My injury was a month ago.

Can I sue my employer? Or is my only option to file a worker's comp claim?
