Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New Mexico

Bugging the workplace

My employer today installed cameras and microphones in hidden places unknown to us all over the office. There was no formal announcement of why this was done or even that it had been done. Someone who asked the owner of the company was told it was to stop people talking to one another instead of working. Is this legal? Thank you in advance for any information.

Re: Bugging the workplace

Yes, it is legal. Under the present state of the law a worker has no expectation of privacy in the workplace, and can be spied upon without limitation. This includes monitoring personal email on company computers or on company time.

Unfortunately, workers have very few rights while they are on the employer's premises. It would be different if the boss started spying on you while you were at home.

Contact your state legistlator if you would like laws passed that better protect worker's rights. It is good for lawmakers to hear that workers vote, too.
