Annexation
I once read that a ranch in California was able to Annex itself from the United States? I was wonder if it is possible to annex privatly owned land in the U.S. from the U.S.? This is just a research project. It's not like I could ever afford any land or the legal cost of annexing it?

You have been given bad information. It is not possible to withdraw land within the bounds of a soverign nation from that nation. The word you are looking for is 'secede' from the union and one cannot do that. That was the basis for the Civil War.
