Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Mexico

Bully victum
I have a 14 yr. old son who was walking home from school and was attacked by two boys who were also about the same age. My son is about 100 lbs, and not a fighter. The boy who hit him is a known bully, and has been harrassing my son for about two weeks. The boy sucker punched my son in the left side of his face, and ran. My son has a very large egg on his cheek bone, and has brusing and swelling. I am not married and my son has no real skills in fighting. I am sick of these kids picking on him. I called the police, but they came so late that it was almost bedtime. The other boys family is also of concern, they are agressive,and seem to encourage this type of behavior in thier son. I worry if I press charges, they will do a drive by shooting at my house, (it happens all the time around here). If I do nothing, then the kid will just harrass my son more and more at school. My son has been picked on for sometime now. I do not know what to do, or what my legal rights are with the kid, his parents and even the school and school bus driver. Can you advise?
