Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Mexico
my mother is being extorted for money, cell phone service, and prescription medications by her "boyfriend." she is a nurse and he is threatening to turn her in to the medical board of nursing for prescribing drugs illegally--even though HE is the one coercing her to do so. what, if any, legal options do i have as her son? is it possible to involve the police without her reputation and or professional license being in jeopardy?
1 Answer from Attorneys
The actions you describe the boyfriend is taking are serious crimes. He can be prosecuted and possibly imprisoned if convicted. Keeping your mother out of the public eye would be most difficult during such a prosecution, however, as she would have to admit to having committed a crime herself. Your best advice is to consult a criminal defense lawyer in your town. Initial consultations are usually done at no cost.
