Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Mexico

We have paid a lawyer to defend my granddaughter on some crimmal charges. He has now taken ill and isn't going to practice law for awhile - that's what we were told today. The law firm does not have a replacement or even his secretary on staff right now. We do not have a court date. What do we do?

There are 2 other cases my granddaughter is connected with that have upcoming court dates one in Federal and one in District Court.

Do we hunt another lawyer? Do we ask for our money back? Do we wait and see?

Because of the uncertainty, your best course of action would be to find another lawyer to represent your GC. You are entitled to the return of all fees which the former lawyer has not earned, and the State Bar of NM can assist you if you have trouble in getting the money back.
