What does it mean when a writ of certiorari type 12-501 is granted by the supreme court?

It means they have agreed to hear the case. The writ is a request for a case to be heard. One does not have an automatic right to be in the SCt. If the writ is denied, you don't get in. In the case you describe, you do.
