Legal Question in Family Law in New Mexico
Adult Daughter Adoption
I need to know if it is a long and difficult process for my 21 yr old birth daughter to have me adopt her back so that her birth certificate is back to the original, listing myself as her mother. She was adopted when she was young by her maternal grandparents, and I have remained a part of her life throughout, however, She now wants her original birth certificate status as she is pregnant with her first child and this is important to her for history reasons and becuase SHE is making a choice as to what she wants. I told her that I would find out any info that I could and help with ANY process necessary to fulfill her desires. Is there a form that I can do myself and file with the correct courts and pay the fees, etc or is it necessary to consult an attorney and pay BIG fees to accomplish this? She is an adult by all federal and state laws standards, so we are hoping to do this with little difficulty and alot of leg work and patience. I hope someone out ther can assist us in what direction we need to head.
Thank you in advance for your time and efforts.

Re: Adult Daughter Adoption
This is called an adult adoption. It is contrasted with a child adoption. This is not a difficult or overly expensive proposition. However, I do not know of any pre-printed form to perform any adoption. From my experience you will have to have an attorney prepare the paperwork. The nice thing here is that you will be spared many of the costs that drive up the price of an adoption of a child.
If you contact a family or adoption lawyer you will find someone who can do what you need. You can go to the New Mexico State Bar web site and find lawyers' names or you can contact the NM state bar lawyer referral service - they can give you the names of several lawyers in your area who do or can perform these type of adoptions. Good luck.
