The short answer is, it's in a state of flux.

It's called spousal support and it's up to the discretion of the judge. There are some preliminary guidelines in place that don't seem to be getting much acceptance. Generally the amount and duration of support depends on the length of the marriage and the ability of the dependent spouse to support him- or herself. Courts seem to prefer temporary spousal support to allow a non-working spouse to develop the ability to become self-supporting.

This is a complex problem with lots of nuances Arrangements for spousal support are generally negotiated between the parties. Best to talk with an attorney and give him/her the details to get a read on the possibilities.
