Legal Question in Family Law in New Mexico
I was married briefly 1974. This marriage only lasted six months and the man left and I have not seen or heard from this person since. The marriage took place in California in a small commercial chapel, but I do not remember the city or County where this occurred. I am considering getting married but I am afraid that this would be considered bigamy. I really don't know whether or not this marriage was legal or not and am having a difficult time finding the records if they even exist. What can I do?

If you were in fact married, you will commit bigamy if you marry again. Contact the State Registrar of Vital Statistics (or a similar sounding department) in CA and locate the record of your marriage license. You can then obtain a divorce in NM after being a resident for six months.
