Legal Question in Family Law in New Mexico
Problems with abuse from parents even though I am an adult
Is there any recourse as an adult to stop all contact completetly with an adult parent who continues to be mentally and emotionally abusive and refuses to stop all contact. Parent continues to ''play games'' and try to insert themselves into my life.

This is a great legal question but about a topic that is distressing in that family relationships have not worked out. It has been some years since I have dealt with this topic so I may be a bit rusty but I'd say what you are asking about is 'injucntive relief.' That is, you are seeking a court order or an 'injunction' seeking to keep a person or persons away from you. I believe they used to call this type of thing a 'peace bond.' Many injunctions will keep someone from taking a certain act, such as selling an item or advertising but, when you are saying that your parents are being mentally and emotionally abusive without defining what behavior it is that they are doing or how you have arrived at that conclusion I am assuming you may not be able to take advantage of the domestic violence law; and, you may not be able to take advantage of the stalking law; but, you may be able to take advantage of the common law injunction to keep them from having further contact with you. There is another term for this legal action but it has been so long since I have heard it or used it I am at a loss to say its name. Be that as it may, seeing a 'family lawyer' or a 'divorce lawyer' will get you to the type of lawyer you need to see so that you can get the legal remedy you seek.
There is also a 'new' type of law in the family law arena that may be worthwhile looking into - it is called collaborative law and the lawyer is a collaborative lawyer. They may be in the yellow pages in your town but if not then contact the State Bar of NM for the collaborative law group. See my other posts on how to go about getting or finding a lawyer.
Good luck in resolving this matter.
