Legal Question in Family Law in New Mexico
What steps do I take after my baby is born to work out child support and visitation as I am unwed?

I presume you are the mother. You don't say where the father is. You need to establish his paternity - by him agreeing to be and is recorded as father on the birth certificate, or a voluntary acknowledgement of paternity filed with the vital records and health statistics bureau of the department of health. If he will not do one of these things you can file a paternity action under Chapter 40 section 11A of the New Mexico Statutes - the New Mexico Uniform Parentage Act. The court can adjudicate parentage. Once the paternity is established you can petition the court to set child support and visitation. You can start the proceedings before the child is born.
