Re: What to do if you suspect bigamy

The question is framed in a bit of an odd way. You ask "What should you do . . . " You did not ask, "What should I do. . . . ?" But, if it was me and I suspected I was the victim of a bigamous relationship I suppose I would do 2 things: (a) I'd go and talk to my church pastor or seek a spiritual advisor and talk with someone about the morality of the issue and seek a path of understanding and a course of personal behavior that would help me get through the other part (b) when I went and talked to a lawyer.

With the lawyer I'd be concerned about things legal: I would explain my investment into the relationship; I'd talk about my children (if there were any) and then I'd look for a way to address the issue that would keep me (and my children) financially secure and at the same time keep me on my spiritual path. I would aske the lawyer to tell me about the Panzer case where there were successive marriages with no divorce inbetween and I would ask how that case related to my own situation. But, I would be careful with myself because in a time when there is a lot of (emotional) pain I don't make the best decisions so, knowing that about myself, I move slowly when I am in pain. The legal world and spiritual world do not often mix well. I would get involved in both of those worlds during this part of the journey. It sounds like I'd have a tough row to hoe for a while. But, I would take solice in knowing that if I was true to myself and my moral values and I kept an eye on my kids (if I had some) I'd come out okay in the end.

If I was you I'd go and look at other postings by the attorney answering this note and look at ways to go and find an attorney in your neck of the woods (well, since it's NM I guess I should say, your area of the beach).

Good luck.
