Legal Question in Family Law in New Mexico
unmarried relationship rights
this really is for a friend. she is in a realtionshp that is unhealthy. he is an ex-cop,(in his 70's), and thinks the law does not apply to him. he is abusive, mentally mainly, but has been physical. they have been together for almost 7 years, he is still married to someone else. he built a house for her so she would always have a place to live. now that the relationship is ending, he says he never did intend for her to stay there. at one time he did sign a paper, notirized, that the house was hers. that paper is now missing from her safe. does she have any rights at all in equity? he also carries a loaded pistol on him at all times, with no permit. she will be leaving 1 nov, when she will have money. is there anything she can do to protect her rights, or does she have any?
hope you can help. if she needs to see an attorney please let me know. she is scared to death right now, and does not know what her rights are.

Re: unmarried relationship rights
Your friend needs to speak with a lawyer. There are issues sounding in partnership or implied partnership. The intimidation you describe is not uncommon however it may keep her from acting. You will not be able to do this on her behalf. You can be a friend and support and encourage her but in the end she will have to be the one to take the step.
