Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Mexico

Man stole over $194,000 from a friend in New Mexico then fled to Michigan. When talking to the man he states that there is nothing they can do to him as long as he never returns to NM...is this true or can he be served in Michigan for a suit filed in New Mexico and can his assets which still reside in NM (house, belongings) be attached?

If he stole the money in NM from a NM resident, then he can be sued in NM and if a Judgment is obtained, take that to MI and get whatever assets are located there. The NM property can also be seized by court order. Consult a lawyer in general practice near you, and/or get a recommendation from a friend. This is not do it yourself. Also, why have criminal charges not been filed? That would be the easier way to solve the problem in many instances.
