Legal Question in Immigration Law in New Mexico

My husband has been here since since the age of 2. He doesn't speak spanish but can understand it. He was brought here from mexico but the people who brought him don't want to help with the immigration process by saying how they brought him in. He came in through one of the border entries in a car and was waved through by the people working there, nothing was asked by them. Ever since he got to the US he has never left outside the country.I wanted to file his immgration paperwork but I'm scared he could get deported and I can't have that happen. Im in the Air Force and have 2 kids, and he takes care of them. What can we do in oder for him not to get deported and get his green card? We haven't started filling any immigration paperwork yet? We have been married for almost 5 years and I want his legality hear in the US to get fixed.
