Legal Question in Personal Injury in New Mexico

Self-defense with Handloaded Ammunition

Is there any legal precedent or case law in reference to using handloaded (reloaded) ammunition rather than factory-ammunition for personal defense? Are there any legal risks, either criminal or civil, in using handloaded ammunition rather than factory-ammunition? These questions apply to either legal, licensed conceal-carry situations or to home defense situations.

Re: Self-defense with Handloaded Ammunition

The possession and use of certain types of fragmentation ammunition have been outlawed - the Black Talon kind of thing. Standard calibers/loads are totally legal as reloads, and there are no laws prohibiting the possession/use of reloaded standard rounds. Whether such activities may be legally undertaken in one's house or garage are, however, other questions. Many states and municipalities have ordinances prohibiting the conduct of inherently dangerous operations on residential premises.
