Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Mexico

land tax

We owe property taxes on a piece of useless land in New Mexico. How can we get rid of the land as well as the back taxes?

Re: land tax

You could wait for aliens to come and beam up all the dirt. You could auction the parcel on eBay. Or, you could quit paying the taxes and let the county auction it off.

Re: land tax

Useless? Beauty (and use and value) are in the eye of the beholder. What efforts have you made to sell it? Where is it and why is it useless?

I'm not sure about New Mexico, but in California, unpaid property taxes are a problem that runs with the land, not with the owner, and if you simply allow the land to go to a tax sale, that would be the end of it in CA, no personal obligation and probably little to no effect on your credit.

I have co-owned and invested in New Mexico lands for years - send me a brief description (county, acreage, improvements if any, and prior use) and I'll see if I can assist you.
