Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Mexico

Property was damaged as a result of squatters in our house who took up residency while we were gone. We were told that we could sue for 3 times the amount of damage. Is this correct? What is the rationalization?

It may be someone was thinking of punitive damages for deliberate vandalism. A more relevant question could be how much money would one be likely to collect from "squatters." Also, the wise thing could be to submit a claim under the homeowners insurance policy and let the insurance company worry about collecting from the wrongdoers. That's what insurance is for.
