Rental Qualifications

My two roomates and I are being told that to qualify for an apartment at a specific community that we each have to qualify individually, specifically our income. We each have to make 3 times the rent. This is the only apartment complex in the city with this specific qualifiaction. The others combine the income of the lease holders to qualify. Can this apartment complex do this?

Yes, they can. Additionally, it's intelligent for them to do that. I own an apartment building in Texas, and that's my practice too.

While the three of you may move in now, it is possible that one or more may move out before the others. By ensuring that each has the financial ability to pay the rent by himself, the apartment building is protecting itself ... and, really all of you.

By qualifying you as a group, the apartment building would be making you inseparable. If one wanted to move, you'd all have to go.

It's safer for each of you, and for the building, for a qualification system like this.
