Legal Question in Tax Law in New Mexico

back taxes

I was married for 12 years, my husband passed away this year. I received letters from the IRS stating

we owed $21000. for 2003 & 2004.

How can this be?

Most likely you had unreported taxable income or the IRS disallowed expenses/deductions/credits that you claimed on your tax returns -- assuming that you filed tax returns. You should consult a tax attorney about the specific facts in your case, as you may be able to avoid a lot of the underlying tax, penalties, & interest.
