Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New Mexico
My older sister died, in Pennsylvania. I am in New Mexico, the only surviving member of the family. She has not left a will, we believe. Her debts are probably greater than the value of her property. I would like to renounce my right to inherit, without compromising the right of another older sister's offspring. Advice?

You are free to renounce your inheritance at any time. It will simply give more of the property to the other heirs. None of the heirs is responsible for the debts of the deceased. Those must be paid from the assets she left behind, and if those assets are insufficient, the creditors don't get paid.
