Hi,

I was sued in small claims court in CA 9,5 years ago for 5,000. lost, moved out of CA shortly, never heard about that till today. There is nothing on my credit report. Someone called today with threats to put a lien on my bank account. Can they do anything after these years?

A California judgment remains valid for 10 years, and can be renewed indefinitely in 10-year increments. So yes, the judgment is still valid and enforceable. Enforcing it in another state is a bit harder than enforcing it in California, but there are ways to do it.

California judgments accrue simple interest at 10% per year, so the judgment is now about $9,750. California law also allows the plaintiff to recover reasonable costs of enforcement, including the additional costs entailed in pursuing a defendant in another state.
