Legal Question in Bankruptcy in New York
What does it mean to have a bankruptcy discharged?
I filed for personal bankruptcy, chapter 7 I think, went to court in 1997. My lawyer explained that the charges made to various credit card accounts, etc. were now discharged, is that the same as the bankrupcy itself being discharged? Why do the charges still appear on my credit report if they have already been discharged?
I thank you in advance for your time and response.

the discharge means that you are no longer legally obligated to pay the debt and the creditor cannot take any action to collect it. it does not affect the credit report.
