Re: Bankruptcy
The purpose of the bankruptcy law (even after the 2005 reforms) is NOT to create homelessness. There are provisions in the law that allow homeowners to keep their homes, and the law is even now being amended to make this easier.
I recommend that you find yourself a bankruptcy attorney local to you (try www.nysba.org if you need a referral). If you cannot afford an attorney, the Legal Aid Society provides good, and free, legal help to those who are income-qualified; call the Queens County branch to see if you qualify. This is NOT charity, btw; Legal Aid lawyers are paid, and the organization is supported in large part by funds obtained from the interest that accrues on lawyers' trust accounts, which is a pretty penny statewide. If Legal Aid refers you out, then the attorney to whom they refer you wants to get in some pro bono time and you'll be doing him/her a favor by allowing him/her to do it through you.
Good luck.
