Legal Question in Bankruptcy in New York
Court Summons for Debt
Can someone walk me through this? Can I negotiate directly with the
creditor?
Thanks.

Yes you can, however, having attorney assistance or "coaching" will make your negotiations FAR more effective. We specialize in this area of the law and have effectively helped over 400 clients this year alone in similar situations to your own. For a free phone consultation, contact us directly this week.
Re: Court Summons for Debt
Make sure to get a letter from the other side that extends the time for you to answer the summons and complaint. If you don't and you don't submit an answer to the court and send it to the creditor's attorney, then they could take your default and not only get the amount of money they seek, but also (perhaps) attorney's fees and court costs. If it's a credit card debt, some credit card contracts provide for arbitration, so you might file a petition to stay (stop) the court proceeding in favor of arbitration.

Yes, you can Negotiate yourself, but the assistance of an attorney will likely save you far more than the legal fees involved.
If you owe other debts, or this is difficult for you to repay, you may consider starting fresh by filing for bankruptcy.
