Legal Question in Bankruptcy in New York
Filing chapter 7 for free
I need to file bankruptcy. I gathered
all my documents and even got
enough money to take the pre-
bankruptcy class but I can't afford
the filing fees. I haven't worked in 6
months. I know they have
installments where I can pay it off
but since I'm not working that isn't
helpful. Is there a way I can file for
free?

Re: Filing chapter 7 for free
According to the Court's website:
Individuals may request court approval to pay the filing fee in installments. Application forms are
available from the Clerk's Office. Up to four payments may be made, with the final payment due
no later than 120 days after the filing of the petition. Failure to make timely payments or to
complete payment of the fee is grounds for dismissal of the bankruptcy petition. No part of the filing fee can be refunded in the event of dismissal.
In any event, and dispite your bleak financial situation, there are many pitfalls in filing yourself. Please see information about representing yourself, on my web site: http://www.bankruptcycanhelp.com/representing-yourself.php
