Legal Question in Bankruptcy in New York
Social Security Disability
About six months ago I received my SSD after 4 years waiting. They held back all my monies. I need that money to survive. Also I need an answer as to how to go about bankruptcy. I was ill for so long and my bills are now over $30,000.
I am drowning and cannot find a way out as the monies I receive monthly are barely enough to pay rent and live on. Please help asap.
Very depressed and scared as I am alone and have no one to turn to.

Re: Social Security Disability
Call your county's Legal Aid Society. You'll find them in the Yellow Pages. They provide free or low-cost help to low-income people regarding such issues as bankruptcy and social security disputes all the time, and they are very, very good at what they do. Their help is free or low-cost to you, but it is NOT charity. These lawyers are paid on salary; the group is funded by the interest on lawyers' escrow accounts that is collected by NY State and disbursed to groups such as Legal Aid to pay for just this sort of thing. No taxing authority or charitable organization is involved.

CLARIFICATION: Legal Aid will have to verify your income and determine that you are income-qualified to receive their help before they can take you on as a client.
