They provide free or low-cost help to low-income people regarding such issues as bankruptcy and social security disputes all the time, and they are very, very good at what they do. Their help is free or low-cost to you, but it is NOT charity. These lawyers are paid on salary; the group is funded by the interest on lawyers' escrow accounts that is collected by NY State and disbursed to groups such as Legal Aid to pay for just this sort of thing. No taxing authority or charitable organization is involved.
