Legal Question in Business Law in New York

My aunt whom I live with was a Directv customer. I am not a customer nor do I have any authorization on her account. I use to pay her bill online for her. She recently cancelled her services and was charged an early cancellation fee. However, Directv debit my account and as a result I incurred late fees. I was told to fax Directv specific document including my address on my bank statement, my overdraft charges, etc. Today I was told by a rep that under "civil law" because we live in the same house I may not get my money back because I benefited from the service. I think this is illegal. What should I do?

I believe that the Cable company is wrong, at least under NYS law. Why don't you simply advise your credit card company that it was an unauthorized charge? They can issue a charge back and you can let your credit card company investigate and resolve it for you. Card companies are more fair than cable companies that want their money, no matter who pays.
