breech of contract
customer canceled contract for three months of work after giving me a deposit. do i have to give the deposit back?

Depends upon the language of the contract and if you had any expenses preparing for the work. Without seeing a copy of the contract, if it has any language about termination and responsibilities, I cannot properly answer the question. You could be entitled to be reimbursed for any costs and expenses you incurred for preparing to do the work (like supplies, materials, etc.).
