Legal Question in Business Law in New York
Business purchase - Legal costs?
I'm seriously considering the purchase of an existing business. I know I'll need an attorney to help with the process, make sure I'm protected, cover things I haven't considered. How much would something like this run me?

Re: Business purchase - Legal costs?
How much it will cost depends largely upon how much work will be involved. Factors that impact the amount of work include the size of the business being purchased and whether that business has any outstanding claims or liabilities.
Ordinarily, if the business is small and has been well run, the process is simple and reasonably inexpensive.

Re: Business purchase - Legal costs?
That's a tough question, because it's like asking how much a car costs. Your cost could depend on several factors, such as the purchase price, type of business, complications, etc. Some lawyers will charge a flat fee; others will want to be paid hourly. In all likelihood you are looking at a bare minimum of $2500, but it could go as high as $10,000 or more. If it's a million dollar deal, expect to pay even more. Again, it all depends on the lawyer's fee structure and hourly rate, as well as the complexity of the deal.
Re: Business purchase - Legal costs?
I agree with David. You are asking a very broad question. Maybe if you can tell us what type of business you want to purchase, how large the business is, how the purchase will be financed, the location of the business, we could give you a better answer.

Re: Business purchase - Legal costs?
Each attorney has their owe fee schedule.
Fees are based on the amount of time spent on the matter and the difficulty of the case.
Without knowing more about your specific case, this is the best answer I can provide.
