Legal Question in Business Law in New York

Cost of a yearly retainer

I operate a business where it will be easy to have disputes or lawsuits. I contacted a foreign law firm to discuss with them their ability to protect my interests in their region and they gave me what seemed like a high quote for their country. I would love to know what a US lawyer would charge for this, especially since I'll need one soon.

Re: Cost of a yearly retainer

I would need to know the nature of your business, and the nature of the issues that are likely to lead to "disputes or lawsuits." Also I would need to know the type of representation your looking for: Some items that affect price: Advisory role to avoid litigation if possible, travel? Active participant in negotiation? Contract drafting and review? Other document drafting and review? Appearance at board meetings and other company events? Would you want full litigation coverage included in retainer cost? I would be happy to discuss these matters to you, if you'd like. Upon an analysis of your needs I would give you a proposal with options (which would affect costs related to representation), but any lawyer who quotes you a price without reviewing your needs is just making up numbers.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter you can e-mail me for more information about low cost face-to-face, on-line or a telephone consultation with a lawyer in our office.

Re: Cost of a yearly retainer

I can say confidently that this would cost $1000 to $100,000.

It all depends on the company, its exposure, its activities, its revenue, its structure and its location.

It also depends on what level of attorney quality the company wants to invest in.

Re: Cost of a yearly retainer

Most U.S. lawyers and/or law firms would charge your business on an hourly rate, which would vary both with the type of legal representation you require and the experience level of the attorney staffing your issue or issues. Those rates could range from $150-$200 per hour for less experienced attorneys to $600-$800 per hour for top trial lawyers in places like New York City and Los Angeles.

There would not (at least in the case of my firm) be an annual retainer, but rather - assuming multiple issues over the course of a year - a negotiated rate, with some issues, such as trademark registration, being done on a flat fee.

Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to discuss this more.
