Counterfeit 100 Accepted at Work - Who pays?

Hi,

I am a waiter in a downtown nightclub in NYC.

During the course of my shift I accept money from

customers. Unknowingly I accepted a counterfeit

$100 bill. We have an inferred light that

illuminates the watermark on the bills. I used this

machine but failed to get the manager's

signature which is the 2nd part of the measures

we use to insure the money's authenticity. Now

my boss is insisting that I make restitution for the

counterfeit bill. Do I have to pay? It doesnt seem

fair. I argued to my boss with this analogy: If an

officer is out on the streets looking for a murderer

and he fails to see the man walk right by him is

the officer libel? He said yes. What should I do?

Normally, a business is stuck with the counterfeit bill and is forced to "eat" it. It appears that your establishment set up proceedures to avoid such a problem...and from what you suggest your knowingly violated proceedures designed to prevent just such a circumstance...in this case you are forced to "eat" it as you are responsible for the money.

Good Luck
