employer collecting past due rent

i am an employer and one of my employees rents from me and is not paying his rent and I wanted to know if I could just take it out of his check so that I can get his rent caught up or if he has a mileage check if I can just make it out to me?

No you can not deduct rent from an employee's pay check absent his written consent.
